The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) approved one updated policy and one new policy regarding cannabis and THC at its May 7, MPRB Board of Commissioners meeting. Both policies go into effect on May 15, 2025.

Updated Tobacco and Cannabis Policy

The current MPRB Tobacco Policy has been updated to include Cannabis and renamed the Tobacco and Cannabis Policy. The policy prohibits smoking and vaping of cannabis in public parks. Like the current Tobacco Policy, it is not enforceable by citation and will not include a petty misdemeanor. Instead, the same approach will be taken as currently applied to tobacco. Any individual will be able to ask or remind another individual to not smoke or vape tobacco and cannabis within the Minneapolis park and recreation system. New signage reflecting the policy update will be installed throughout the park and recreation system this summer.

The policy also refines the definition of traditional tobacco used as part of a traditional spiritual or cultural ceremony.

The Tobacco and Cannabis Policy adds cannabis to the list of becoming completely tobacco free by prohibiting the use of all tobacco products on Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board lands and in Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board owned and/or operated facilities.

New THC Policy

The new THC Policy provides direction on how concessions and permitted events can sell THC edible products within the Minneapolis park and recreation system.

The policy includes provisions that only beverages or edible products containing no more than 5 mg of THC potency per serving are authorized and bans the smoking and/or vaping of cannabis, THC, THC derivatives or synthetically similar products.

Cannabis and THC products means any product containing cannabis flower, cannabis plants or cannabinoids.

The State of Minnesota passed Cannabis Legislation (Chapter 63, H.F. 100) during the 2023 legislative session. Per State Law, smoking and vaping of Cannabis or THC products is allowed on public property but can be prohibited by local jurisdictions. State law also establishes that the use of THC in edibles and beverages can be regulated by local entities.

The City of Minneapolis plans to begin a pilot program for traffic safety cameras. The pilot will start as early as August 2025. The cameras will provide automated enforcement of speed limits starting at about five locations. The City may expand up to a max of 42 camera locations during the pilot period. The pilot may also expand to include enforcement of red lights.

Public Works staff have identified 51 initial candidate camera locations. We will use public feedback to help determine the initial locations and any future additions.

The pilot is the result of legislation from the state of Minnesota.

The new law addresses issues of:

  • Fairness
  • Equity
  • Privacy
  • Trust

Read the State Law Provisions for the pilot.

The City is seeking feedback about the proposed camera locations. Please complete this short survey to provide feedback.

More information is available on the City website.

The Mill Yard at Stonebridge Lofts

The Mill City.  Residents celebrate our area’s industrial heritage of the mighty Mississippi River and the mills. Today, what we see are the most recognizable Minneapolis landmarks. However, this is only part of the story. Rail lines were key to Minneapolis’ growth, and were particularly integral to the Mill District, bringing in wheat and timber and shipping out flour and lumber. We also honor the history of the mills, the reason for the rail yard’s existence.  The Mill Yard aims to be both a gathering place for art and artists and a conduit by which art can be shared with and disseminated into the wider community.

ARTIST DETAILS:

Tom Dimock

Growing up, Tom Dimock lived across the US while his father was a dentist in the Navy. His mother was an artist and besides her influence his father’s cousin is a famous Seattle artist. After Tom served on the USS Henry B. Wilson he earned his BFA from the Art Center in Pasadena, California. He worked as a freelance illustrator while pursuing fine art, later earning an MFA from the University of Minnesota. An award-winning Minneapolis artist with international acclaim, he continues his career as a plein air impressionist, painting across the U.S. and Europe.

Greg Lecker

Greg Lecker is a dedicated visual artist and naturalist. Greg works from direct observation as well as from writing and photographic references to study the natural world. Working primarily in oil, his canvases illuminate with energy and color, motion and emotion through brushstrokes, color and light. “When a field painting session especially interests me; I explore the subject in the studio. I use my artistic practice as a way to understand the natural world and our connection to it.” Through multiple residencies Greg has studied the Mississippi & St. Croix Rivers and the Arctic Ocean (Svalbard, Norway). Greg’s work is also on view at the Northrup King Building #183.

Jeanne Lukas

Jeanne Lukas is a ceramic sculptor. During her career in marketing she found clay her creative passion.  Jeanne’s journey began at the University of Minnesota then continued at the Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis, Craft Alliance in St. Louis, and Anderson Ranch in Colorado. She is currently working full-time in her Northrup King studio. Jeanne’s pieces are hand-built, carved and textured in unique designs.  Her pieces range from functional to decorative.

Dan Petrov

Born in Serbia, Dan Petrov spent most of his University summers in northern Italy studying painting techniques of Renaissance and contemporary painters. After University his museum studies extended to France, England and Holland where he copied old masters. Combining Indirect and Direct Painting Methods Dan arrived at the techniques he uses today.  His studies of visual art continued in Canada from 1992 to 2006 when he relocated his studio to Minneapolis. From 2006 to 2010 Dan was the part of The Atelier comprehensive studio art program. “During the last four years I have been painting narrative portraits that treat different aspects of human condition. These works go beyond the model and likeness to deliver more universal aspects of individual or group, relations to tradition and culture and some stories that are fundamentally relevant for all of us.”

Mary Sannerud

Mary Sannerud is a felt-maker. She creates home textiles through the process of wet-felting. She came to this work by great surprise, having grown up never using her hands to make beauty. She was taught traditional felt rug making in the U.S. by a family of felt-makers from Kyrgyzstan, then lived and worked with her mentors in  Kyrgyz Republic for 3 months. This time of learning deeply rooted her work and gave her a broader understanding of the importance of felt in the home. She is constantly creating from her love of the land where she lives on the North Shore of MN.

Anne Waddell, Jewelry

Anne has always been an artist. After graduating with a BFA in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design she enjoyed a successful career selling high-end jewelry, always creating her own in a garage studio. For over five years Anne has focused exclusively on her own brand, drawing inspiration from her life experiences and nature. She works with gold, silver and precious and semi-precious gemstones. She has numerous successful collections and curated partnerships which allowed her to open a new studio in Deephaven, MN.
